?A hundred years on – commemorating World War One. The first battle of Ypres?

Map_First_Battle_of_Ypres_1914_NYT_May_1915On June 28th 1914, the heir to the throne to the Austro-Hungarian Empire was assassinated by Serbian Nationalist Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo. This shocking event started a chain of declarations of war, which resulted in Germany and her allies being in a state of war with Russia, France and the United Kingdom by August. In August, Germany invaded Belgium, on the way to invading France. August to October witnessed the battles of Tannenberg, Marne and Ypres. This short talk will commemorate these events, discuss the first battle of Ypres and the stalemate of trench warfare, and demonstrate some period firearms and equipment.
